A security guard stationed at Jumbo Mine in Mazowe was apprehended following an incident where he shot two individuals in the legs for trespassing on the premises.
The accused, identified as Denford Chimhanda (39) from Chizengeya Village in Muzarabani, is currently receiving medical treatment at Concession Hospital under police supervision after being attacked by a mob.
According to Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha, the provincial police spokesperson, the victims, Munashe Makoni (25) and Talent Hwami (22), are also hospitalized at the same facility.
The incident occurred on Sunday around 1 pm at Ashma, Jumbo Mine in Mazowe. Chimhanda, who was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun, noticed Hwami entering the premises through the fence and proceeded to shoot him in the left leg.
Makoni intervened to assist his friend and was subsequently shot in both legs with a single round.
Sgt Major Chikasha explained that approximately 12 people from the surrounding area formed a mob and confronted Chimhanda, disarming him. The security guard sustained severe injuries to his head, including a deep cut and bruises, as he was assaulted with the butt of the shotgun.
Chimhanda’s was rescued by members of the ZRP Support Unit deployed for the ‘Operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere’ initiative.
Sgt Major Chikasha appealed to security companies, urging them to provide comprehensive training and equip their personnel with appropriate skills for handling firearms to prevent unnecessary discharge incidents.
He also emphasized that the public should refrain from taking the law into their own hands and resorting to assault against individuals suspected of committing offenses.
