Two individuals in their 50s were apprehended following a high-speed pursuit with the police in Randfontein, Gauteng on Monday, August 14. The West Rand K9 unit, engaged in crime prevention patrols in the Randfontein area, successfully arrested the suspects, as stated by Gauteng police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi to the Daily Sun.
Nevhuhulwi reported that the officers observed a suspicious Ford Figo and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. However, the suspects chose to evade the police and accelerated, prompting a pursuit. During the chase, the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a crash. Upon searching the car, law enforcement discovered an AK-47 rifle, an R5 rifle with magazines, ammunition, and both rifles had their serial numbers filed off.
One of the suspects sustained an injury and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The apprehended pair is expected to make a court appearance in the near future, facing charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, the provincial police commissioner, commended the officers for their vigilance in apprehending the suspects.
