In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the residents of Trenance in a state of disbelief, a well-known local drinker has succumbed to the icy clutches of the weather, or so it seems. Some speculate that his excessive alcohol intake played a major role in this devastating outcome.
The lifeless body was discovered sprawled on the ground, sending sh0ckwaves through the peaceful community. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the tragic incident, leaving everyone in mourning.
According to eyewitnesses, the deceased, notorious for his frequent visits to local bottle stores, had allegedly purchased not one but two hefty 750ml bottles of spirits from Moyo Shopping Centre before embarking on his ill-fated journey to another drinking spot.
This isn’t the first time such a scene has unfolded in this area. In recent times, alcohol abuse has claimed the lives of three individuals, all tragically found helplessly lying on the ground.
One concerned local, Patson Khumalo, expressed his dismay over the incident, highlighting the astonishing distance the deceased had covered despite his alcohol consumption. “He traveled a considerable distance, about three to four kilometers, from Moyo shops until we found him lying lifeless. It seems he believed he had reached home and decided to sleep outside, unaware of the harsh weather conditions,” he shared, his head shaking in disbelief.
Khumalo further drew attention to a disturbing trend in the neighborhood— the consumption of undiluted illicit brews, a practice that can prove fatal. “Most of these victims consume these substances without dilution, and the alcohol content is excessively high. As a result, they lose their senses and behave in unusual ways, as we have unfortunately witnessed,” he explained, urging for greater awareness regarding the dangers associated with such practices.
Another resident, Wellington Ndlovu, expressed his deep concern over the prevalence of street vendors who enable this tragic cycle. “This is the third case in our area, and all the victims have consumed excessive undiluted alcohol. It is undoubtedly a cause for concern,” he voiced, hoping for effective measures to curb the illicit trade.
The aftermath of alcohol abuse extends far beyond the individual, leaving families devastated, particularly when the breadwinner is lost. “The families of the deceased are left stranded, as they heavily rely on the fathers. Unfortunately, due to alcohol, they are now left struggling to make ends meet. It’s a heartbreaking situation for the whole community,” Ndlovu emotionally explained.
Amidst the sorrow that shrouds Trenance, resident Phathisani Ncube passionately appealed to law enforcement agencies to crack down on those operating without proper licenses. “We implore the police and other authorities to take action against these perpetrators who distribute these deadly illicit drugs. It would undoubtedly reduce the number of people falling victim to alcohol abuse,” he pleaded, hoping for a swift response.
