On Tuesday, a Zimbabwean man was sentenced to life imprisonment in South Africa for rɑping his girlfriǝnd’s six-year-old daughter. The man, Peter Kaundura, was also given an additional two-year sentence for illegally crossing the border without a passport. The South African Police Services (Saps) welcomed the sentence, as it reflects the severity of the crime.
According to court records, Kaundura committed the rɑpe on January 1, 2020, in Topanama village outside Lephepane. He was the live-in partner of the victim’s mother and was caught by the child’s uncle in the act. The incident was reported to the police, and Kaundura was arrested on the same day. Investigations began on March 17, and he remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.
Saps spokesperson for Limpopo province, Malesela Ledwaba, said that Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, welcomed the verdict. The Naphuno Regional Court found Kaundura guilty of rɑpe and sentenced him to life imprisonment, acknowledging the seriousness of the offence.
