A Ghanaian minister whose maids are accused of stealing more than US$1 million in foreign and local currency stashed in her bedroom has been arrested on suspicion of corruption.
Cecilia Abena Dapaah resigned at the weekend saying she was determined to clear her name after the theft raised speculation about why a minister had so much cash in her house.
On Monday Dapaah, who was minister for sanitation and water, was arrested “in respect of suspected corruption and corruption-related offences regarding large amounts of money,” the special prosecutor said in a statement.
Details of the theft from Dapaah’s home last year, which included $1 million in US dollars, €300,000 and millions of Ghanaian cedis, recently came to light when her two housekeepers appeared in court.
