Former Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) spokesperson, Witness Dube, has defected to the ruling party, ZANU PF, citing their genuine desire to serve the people of Zimbabwe as the reason for his decision. Dube, who had been a member of the opposition party since its formation in 1999, resigned from the Douglas Mwonzora-led party before attending the ZANU PF star rally in Centenary, Mashonaland Central.
In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Mail, Dube criticized the MDC’s leadership, saying that they had collapsed all organs of the party and abandoned the organic relations which the party’s founding fathers had with the people. He also accused both Nelson Chamisa and Douglas Mwonzora of tearing the MDC apart when they both decided to run for secretary-general back in 2014.
Dube praised ZANU PF for their clear and systematic pursuit of their agenda, saying that they were the only party with a genuine passion and love for the people of Zimbabwe. He further accused the opposition of using the people to create jobs for each other and to access taxpayers’ money through political funding.
According to Dube, ZANU PF has developed to be the best it can be, while the opposition formations have been degenerating without any hope of self-healing as they have no institutional capacity to do so.
Dube’s defection is likely to be a significant blow to the MDC, which has been struggling to remain relevant in Zimbabwean politics.
