Witness Dube, the former National Secretary for Information and Publicity for the MDC, has defected to the ruling Zanu-PF party.

Dube surprised many today when he was spotted among the crowds at a Zanu-PF presidential star rally in Centenary, Mashonaland Central province.

Former MDC-T bigwigs Cdes Witness Dube and Blessing Chebundo

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was in Centenary to address party supporters ahead of the August 23 elections. But all eyes turned to Dube when he was seen donning Zanu-PF regalia and chatting with Cde Blessing Chebundo.

Dube had announced his resignation from the MDC earlier today. In his resignation letter, he hinted that he would be joining a new political home.

It now seems clear that new political home is Zanu-PF, as photos show Dube celebrating and awaiting President Mnangagwa’s address at the star rally.

The defection is another blow for the struggling MDC, which has seen a number of members and supporters return to Zanu-PF in recent years.

Disillusioned with the opposition’s inability to bring change or effectively challenge Zanu-PF, many Zimbabweans have concluded that returning to the ruling party is the only option to have their voices heard.

Dube’s public joining of Zanu-PF at today’s rally makes it clear he now shares this view, putting his former party’s strategy and direction further into question.
