A Citizens Coalition for Change activist spent a night in police cells after being arrested for allegedly calling a Zanu PF supporter a pr0stitute.
Consider Chidimure appeared before a Karoi magistrate facing a criminal insult charge.
Prosecutors claim Chidimure asked Yolanda Hannock to help her collect CCC regalia from a candidate. She gave Hannock T-shirts but Hannock later returned them, saying she backed Zanu PF.
Four days later, Hannock was at a netball game when Chidimure confronted her for refusing the regalia. Chidimure allegedly insulted her, calling her a prostitute and slagging off Zanu PF.
Hannock filed a police report and Chidimure was arrested.
In court, the magistrate did not ask Chidimure to enter a plea and released her on free bail.
A Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights lawyer represented Chidimure while prosecutors pushed for action over the alleged insults.
The case highlights rising political tensions ahead of next month’s elections, with activists on both sides facing police action.
