GAMBLER ROBBED AT GUNPOINT
A Zengeza betting addict was left counting his losses after gunmen made off with almost US$1,700 in winnings in a daring daylight robbery. Eliot Jongwe Muzanembo was conducting his usual business at Zengeza 3 shopping centre on July 10 when a man approached and started harassing him.
Witnesses heard 3 gunshots as Muzanembo was robbed of his gambling winnings of US$1,700. Since the incident, the unfortunate gambler has not been seen.
Muzanembo’s friend Masimba Marufu revealed what happened, saying “Muzanembo won US$1,700 from betting and I think some people at the betting house tipped off the robber.”
Marufu said a white Honda Fit without number plates parked outside and a man jumped out and started harassing Muzanembo. Initially they thought he was an undercover cop.
After hearing 3 gunshots, they fled and returned to find Muzanembo saying he’d been robbed of all his US$1,700 winnings.
Police Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident but claimed only US$570 and a cellphone were stolen.
The brazen broad daylight robbery left the gambler counting his losses after what seems a tip-off to corrupt criminals who are ready to use violence to benefit from others’ gains.
