A Harare woman, Auxilia Kupara, has claimed that her husband, Peter Tutai, has been physically and emotionally abusing her since they got married in 1984.
Kupara, who had a child from a previous relationship when they got married, stated that Tutai constantly calls her a pr0stitute and insults her in public.
Moreover, she claimed that Tutai had chased her out of their house with her grandchildren, saying that a “pr0stitute should sleep outside.”
Kupara further alleged that Tutai was in the process of selling their Ushewokunze stand, which was given to them by their housing cooperative. However, Tutai vehemently denied all the accusations, stating that he never laid a hand on his wife. He also claimed that he had taken care of Kupara’s child until he completed Form Four and accused him of stealing his property.
The matter was brought before Magistrate Sharon Mashavira, who granted Kupara a peace order against her husband. The order prevents Tutai from contacting or harassing Kupara in any way. It is unclear whether the couple will reconcile or if their marriage is beyond repair.
