Mathias Mhere had a close brush with death over the weekend after being involved in an accident while travelling to a show. The 34-year-old musician was travelling approximately 40 km outside of Bulawayo when his kombi veered off the road, sideswiping a bridge rail.
Mhere and the other passengers were thrown around inside the vehicle but managed to walk away with only minor injuries. However, Mhere is nursing back and chest pains from the impact. The bass guitarist suffered the worst injuries but is receiving medical care.
Despite the trauma of the accident, Mhere still went on to perform at the Winter Warmer Show in Harare Gardens headlined by Alick Macheso. During his performance, Mhere told the audience how lucky he was to survive the crash.
He credits God for saving his life, saying “God still loves me, that is the only reason I am still alive.” Mhere urged drivers to be more cautious on the roads to avoid accidents. “We need to be careful to save lives because accidents can happen in an instant,” he said.
After the performance, Mhere said the band’s kombi driver might have dozed off causing the accident, but they were grateful no one was seriously hurt. The musician is still in pain from the accident but glad to be alive.
