The opposition party MDC-T has lost its bid to force the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to register 87 of its aspiring MPs who were rejected by the nomination court on June 21 after they failed to pay the candidate fees.

The High Court judge, Justice Webster Chinamhora, sitting as an Electoral Court, ruled that he had no jurisdiction to deal with the matter.

ZEC argued that the party had no right to challenge the nomination of candidates, and all 87 of them had concurrently filed an appeal before the Electoral Court.

The MDC-T had maintained that the matter was properly before the judge, arguing that the party had the right to approach the court.

The nomination courts rejected 87 of the MDC-T’s candidates after the party tried a system of “centralised payment,” which ZEC did not accept.

Zimbabweans will vote in general elections on August 23, and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said it intends to publish the final list of candidates by June 30.
