A man has been charged with murder after a deadly assault at a nightclub in Harare, Zimbabwe. Calisto Murawo appeared in court accused of fatally attacking David Matambo during an altercation at Afro 161 nightclub, owned by Calisto’s sister Belinda Murawo.
The court heard that Calisto confronted David and his wife Zinzi in the club parking lot on Saturday night. He accused Zinzi of bumping into another car. When David went to check for damage, Calisto punched him in the mouth with a knuckle duster. David fell to the ground and Calisto began kicking him in the head and neck, then stamped on his neck.
Calisto left the scene, dumped his car and fled. He did not show any remorse or try to help David. David was pronounced dead from the assault.
Calisto did not enter a plea but arrived in court with his lawyer Arshiel Mugiya. Calisto was denied bail and remanded in custody until his next court appearance. The prosecutor Zebediah Bofu argued that Calisto fled the scene instead of helping David, showing he knew the assault was very serious.
Relatives of David wept in court as the disturbing details of the assault and murder were read out. Calisto can only apply for bail at the High Court.
