A horrifying car accident on the Gweru-Zvishavane highway on Monday claimed the lives of two people and injured several others. The fatal crash occurred near Siboza shopping centre early in the morning when a Honda Fit travelling towards Zvishavane collided head-on with a Toyota Wish heading the opposite direction.
According to police, the driver of the Wish, Peter Zvimire of Beitbridge, lost control of his vehicle and swerved into the oncoming lane, smashing into the Honda Fit.
The impact of the crash was devastating. The Honda, driven by Edson Verengai of Zvishavane, veered off the road, rolled over and landed on its roof. Verengai and a passenger in the front seat were killed instantly. Three other passengers were injured.
The Toyota Wish also careened off the road, rolling before coming to rest on its wheels some 42 metres away. The driver and two passengers were hurt while two others escaped unharmed.
Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko urged motorists to drive carefully and within the speed limit, saying “We need to observe the rules of the road and adjust our speed based on road conditions to avoid such tragedies.”
