Celebrations have erupted among supporters of Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu-PF, as it extends its early lead ahead of elections.
Zanu-PF has secured 53 council wards uncontested after opposition parties failed to field candidates. Zanu-PF National Political Commissar Cde Mike Bimha expressed his satisfaction with the results, congratulating the 53 candidates who won without having to campaign.
While the party is still waiting for reports on the outcome of National Assembly members, Cde Bimha believes that most of the seats were contested. The opposition’s failure to field candidates has been a boost for Zanu-PF, which looks set to cement its hold on power.
More updates are expected to follow.
