Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu-PF, has secured uncontested victories in various areas due to confusion within opposition ranks. In some cases, opposition parties failed to field candidates, leading to Zanu-PF candidates being elected unopposed.
One such area is Gwanda Municipality, where Zanu-PF candidates Sithabiso Mpofu and Thulani Moyo were elected unopposed in Wards 1 and 2 respectively, as the CCC party failed to field candidates. Meanwhile, some CCC candidates, including Gwanda Mayor Njabulo Siziba, chose to run as independent candidates due to confusion within their party.
The MDC also failed to field any candidates in Matabeleland South, allowing Zanu-PF to take the lead in the region.
In Bulawayo, Zanu-PF was the only party to submit its list for the provincial council, sweeping all 10 seats for the quota.
While these are the noted cases in Matabeleland, the ruling party is reportedly leading by a wider margin as the opposition struggles to field candidates in different parts of the country.
The confusion within opposition ranks has been a boon for Zanu-PF, which looks set to extend its grip on power.
Stay tuned for more updates on the situation.
