Zimbabwean comedienne Felistas Murata, known by her stage name Mai TT, was sentenced to 9 months in prison after being found guilty of defaulting on community service and theft of trust property.
Prosecutors revealed they had to search 8 years of records to confirm Mai TT had defaulted on her 2015 community service sentence for assault.
For the theft charge involving a borrowed car, she received 12 months with 6 suspended.
Mai TT showed little emotion during sentencing. Her lawyer claimed she was unaware of the warrant issued in 2015, but the court found Mai TT dishonest and lacking remorse.
The magistrate also found Mai TT guilty of perjury and sentenced her to 3 months for defaulting on community service.
While considering her sentence for theft, the court took into account that she has children and did not financially benefit from the crime. However, a fine was deemed to trivialize the offense, so she received 6 months in prison.
Mai TT still has a pending fraud case and will return to court in August. Prosecutors had to search 8 years of records to confirm her default on community service, underscoring her dishonesty.
Mai TT’s legal troubles serve as a warning about the consequences of dishonesty, fraud and lying in court. Her fans now have to come to terms with the reality that their favorite comedian is behind bars and still faces more legal issues.
