Zimbabwe Republic Police have released the names of six of the seven victims who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident involving a CAG bus on June 10 along the Harare-Mukumbura Road.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the police identified the six victims after their next of kin reported them.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Romeo Nyapfere of Empowement Way in Willowvale, Harare
- Shamain Nyoka of Gorejena Village in Dotito, Mt Darwin
- Stella Chikadaya of Kabhareta Village in Kandeya, Mt Darwin
- Fackson Chiungu (a one-week old infant) of Kabhareta Village in Mt Darwin
- Kosva Nawero of Rujeko area in Glendale
- Aurthur Nheta of Kararira Village, Chiswiti in Mukumbura
At least 45 other people were injured in the accident, with some admitted to Mt Darwin District Hospital.
The accident occurred around 1 pm when the CAG bus burst a front tire, causing it to veer off the road and overturn, landing on its right side. Five people died at the scene while two others passed away after being admitted to Mt Darwin District Hospital.
The victims’ bodies were taken to Mt Darwin District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi urged drivers to be safety conscious by checking vehicle tires regularly to meet road conditions and operators to ensure vehicles do not exceed load capacities. The remaining victim is yet to be identified.
