A 96-year-old grandmother is in critical condition at Mpilo Central Hospital after allegedly being attacked by her 32-year-old grandson. Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and discouraged vigilantism.
According to sources, Hloniphani Ncube came home late at night and his grandmother Assa Bhebhe scolded him for his behavior. This angered Hloniphani, who allegedly grabbed his frail grandmother, punched her in the face and then attacked her on the back of the head with an axe, leaving her bleeding on the floor.
A neighbor heard screaming and called an ambulance, which rushed Assa Bhebhe to the hospital intensive care unit. She is fighting for her life.
Police arrested Hloniphani Ncube in connection with the attack. Inspector Ncube said community members should resolve disputes through engagement with relatives, elders, pastors or police instead of taking matters into their own hands.
