The Bulawayo police are investigating the tragic death of a pedestrian who was involved in a fatal hit and run accident last week.

The incident occurred along Robert Mugabe Road near the intersection of 5th and 6th Avenues around 9:30 pm on Wednesday. An unidentified man between 30 to 35 years old was struck by a vehicle while crossing the road.

According to police sources, the driver fled the scene immediately without bothering to check on the victim or report the accident. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Few details are available about either the vehicle or the victim. Police said the deceased was wearing black pants, a blue work jacket and navy blue Puma sneakers at the time of the accident. They urged witnesses or anyone with information to come forward to help identify the victim and locate the at-fault driver.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), expressed concern over the growing number of hit and run accidents in Bulawayo. Last December, police launched a manhunt for at least 20 drivers involved in hit and runs where victims were abandoned after collisions.

Hit and run incidents leave victims and their families with unanswered questions and no closure. Anyone with information on this recent fatal pedestrian accident is asked to contact the Bulawayo police immediately.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder for all drivers to exercise caution, obey speed limits and stop to render aid following any traffic accident – no matter the circumstances. Fleeing the scene only compounds the harm and must be avoided.
