A 52-year-old man was robbed after being offered a lift by strangers in Shurugwi on Monday, according to police.
The victim, Felix Matenda from Munikwa village, had boarded a grey Honda Fit occupied by three people near Glow Service Station.
Once the vehicle was away from populated areas along the Shurugwi-Masvingo Road, the driver pulled over and one of the passengers produced a knife. They threatened Matenda and demanded his money and cellphone.
The robbers fled with $385 in cash and Matenda’s phone, leaving him unharmed. Police have launched a search for the three suspects but have released no identifying details.
Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko urged the public to avoid accepting rides from private vehicles and to use public transport instead to reduce the risk of similar crimes.
He said, “We urge members of the public to stop boarding mushikashika [private] vehicles, and instead use public transport.”
