A heartbreaking tale of ultimate sacrifice is coming out of Rocklin, California. Casey Rivara, 41, ensured a family of ducks made it across the busy road safely. But in putting the safety of the small ducklings above his own, Rivara lost his own life.
Witnesses say after leaving his own vehicle, Rivara carefully shepherded the ducks crossing the intersection until they reached the other side. As he started to make his way back across, fate intervened. An oncoming teenage driver failed to see Rivara and struck him, taking his life in an instant.
“My children saw the whole thing. They said the man was making sure the ducks crossed OK,” recalled witness Summer Peterson.
Friends and family have been left reeling, describing Rivara as ‘the kindest, most amazing’ man who even in death showed ‘his compassion.’
Though the driver who struck Rivara is unlikely to face charges, the tragic loss has spurred an outpouring of emotion. Memorials of rubber ducks and flowers now stand where Rivara took his final steps. His widow Angel released a statement saying “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude… It’s truly humbling to hear how Casey has positively impacted your lives.”
A gentle soul’s final gesture of helping harmless creatures has highlighted the innate goodness that still exists in this world. But it also serves as a tragic reminder of the fragility of life, and how a simple act of kindness can cost us everything.
