A 17-year-old teenager sadly lost his life in Mvuma, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe after being offered a lift by strangers.

John Mbano from Chivhu had boarded a Toyota SUV on May 13 with two other passengers, heading to Masvingo. There were already four people inside – three men and a woman.

Instead of continuing on to Masvingo, the driver turned around and headed back to Chivhu on a detour road. The SUV pulled over in a secluded area, where the occupants allegedly demanded money and possessions from the passengers.

According to police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the suspects assaulted the passengers with an iron bar after tying their hands up. They robbed John and the others of cash and cellphones worth over $285 as well as groceries.

The attackers then dropped John in a nearby bush, where police found his lifeless body later. He had multiple stab wounds and was taken to the Mvuma District Hospital mortuary. Inspector Mahoko urged the public to avoid unregistered transport and report any information that could help solve the case.
