The footballing world in Masvingo and beyond is mourning the loss of a true legend, Talent Asante Sande, who passed away at his home in Mucheke on Tuesday. The former award-winning goalkeeper, known for his agility and unwavering dedication to the sport, was only 43 years old. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless fans who admired his talent on the pitch.
Sande’s brother, Allan, confirmed the news to The Mirror, revealing that his brother had been battling the effects of a stroke he suffered in 2022. “My brother suffered a stroke in 2022. He collapsed and died at home at house number 3475 Mboroma Street, Mucheke, Masvingo on Tuesday. His burial is today at our rural home in Lalapanzi,” Allan shared, his voice heavy with grief.
“We are deeply saddened by his untimely death. My brother played a pivotal role in bringing our family together. He began his soccer career at a tender age and represented many football clubs across the country. It is truly disheartening that we have lost him at this time as he still had much to contribute to the football community,” he added, reflecting on the legacy his brother leaves behind.
Born on December 29, 1981, Sande was the second of four children, growing up in a close-knit family in Lalapanzi. He attended St Mathias Primary School before moving on to St Patrick’s in Chiundura, where he completed his O-level education in 2000. His passion for football was evident from a young age, and he quickly made a name for himself on the local fields.
After leaving school, Sande joined Nzuma Bar, a former Division 1 outfit, marking the beginning of his professional football journey. In 2004, he joined Masvingo United, a club that would become synonymous with his name. For five years, he donned the colours of Masvingo United, showcasing his exceptional goalkeeping skills and earning the respect of fans and fellow players alike.
His talent did not go unnoticed, and in 2014, Sande moved to Beitbridge to join Border Strikers, further expanding his reach and experience within the Zimbabwean football landscape. He continued to ply his trade, joining Nichrut FC in 2018 before moving on to Green Fuel in 2019. His last professional stint was with TelOne FC in Gweru, where he was crowned Goalkeeper of the Year for the Central Region Division 1 league in 2021.
