Mazowe – Tragedy has struck the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) once again, with the death of Constable Amanda Katanha, who was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking home with colleagues after work. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 12, 2025, along the Mazowe-Centenary Road.
ZRP national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the devastating news. “A police officer, Constable Amanda Katanha, stationed at ZRP Mazowe, died on April 12, 2025, after being hit by a Toyota Probox vehicle, registration number AGP 8475, with three passengers on board at around 1840 hours at the 17 kilometre peg along Mazowe-Centenary Road,” said Nyathi.
According to police reports, Constable Katanha was walking on the extreme side of the road with two other police officers after completing their duties at Dowkins Farm in Concession. The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 PM at the 17-kilometre peg along the Mazowe-Centenary road.
The vehicle involved in the fatal accident was identified as a Toyota Probox with registration plate AGP8475, and had three passengers on board at the time of the incident.
That fatal incident occurred on 30 December 2024, at around 5:50 PM at the 42 km peg. The officer was conducting routine roadblock checks when a Freightliner Columbia truck attempted to bypass the checkpoint without stopping, resulting in the officer being struck on the head by the trailer.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on December 30, 2024, at around 1750 hours at the 42 km peg along Mazowe-Centenary road, Mvurwi in which a police officer was killed,” police said in a statement following the December incident.
The truck only came to a halt when it collided with a stationary Nissan X-Trail at the checkpoint. “Subsequently, the truck collided with a Nissan X-trail vehicle which was stationary at the roadblock site. The police officer sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mvurwi Hospital.”
The recent death of Constable Katanha has once again highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, both on and off duty. The ZRP is yet to release further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident, and investigations are ongoing.
