Harare – A 46-year-old man from Glen View has been arrested on allegations of repeatedly raping his 18-year-old daughter-in-law over a period of five consecutive days. The shocking case has prompted a police investigation and left Glen View residents reeling.
The accused, a father of three sons and one daughter, is alleged to have taken advantage of his daughter-in-law while her husband, his son, was away at work. The daughter-in-law, who is also a mother to a five-month-old baby, had been sleeping in the dining room with her husband, who typically returned home around midnight.
According to reports, the man would allegedly sneak out of the bedroom he shared with his wife, enter the dining room, and assault his daughter-in-law. The details of the alleged assaults are particularly disturbing.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrest and provided details of the allegations.
“Police arrested a Glen View 3 man for rape,” said Insp Chakanza. “Accused is complainant’s father-in-law.”
“Circumstances are that on March 18, at around 9pm, complainant was sleeping in the dining room where they usually sleep with her husband. Accused person went to where the complainant was asleep. Complainant discovered that the accused person was not her husband and accused slapped the complainant twice on her face. The accused person hand cuffed the complainant and covered her mouth using a Sellotape and raped her once without protection. The accused person raped the complainant on five consecutive days using the same modus operandi.”
It is alleged that the man used handcuffs to restrain his daughter-in-law and covered her mouth with Sellotape to silence her during the alleged assaults. The police have not yet established how the man obtained the handcuffs. He is further accused of threatening to kill her five-month-old child if she disclosed the rapes to anyone.
The daughter-in-law eventually found an opportunity to escape from the house and confided in her mother, who then reported the alleged crimes to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.
“The complainant told her mother leading to the arrest while she was escorted to Family Support Clinic for medical examination,” said Insp Chakanza.
The complainant has since been escorted to the Family Support Clinic for a medical examination.
