Harare – Recent data released by Global DNA Zimbabwe, a leading DNA testing company owned by Tinashe Mugabe, popularly known as ‘The DNA Man’, has revealed a startling trend in paternity within the country. According to their latest figures, a staggering 72% of paternity tests conducted have yielded negative results, indicating that in the majority of cases, men are unknowingly raising children to whom they are not biologically related.
These alarming statistics paint a picture of widespread uncertainty and potential deception within Zimbabwean families, raising profound questions about trust, fidelity, and the evolving dynamics of parenthood. The findings also highlight the growing demand for DNA testing services as men seek to confirm or dispel doubts about their children’s biological parentage.
The implications of these negative paternity test results are far-reaching. They can lead to emotional distress, family breakdowns, and legal battles over child custody and inheritance. For the children involved, discovering that their presumed father is not their biological father can be a deeply unsettling and life-altering experience.
The prevalence of negative paternity results is further underscored by the outcomes often witnessed on Tinashe Mugabe’s ‘Global DNA Show’. The reality show interviews purported parents who harbour doubts about their children’s paternity, before revealing their DNA test results live on air. In many episodes, the alleged father is proven not to be the biological father, often resulting in emotional and dramatic scenes.
One particularly memorable episode from last year featured a retired Kariba man who had suffered a stroke, leaving him disabled and unable to speak. The man was devastated to learn that the three children he had fathered with his mistress were not biologically his. Adding to the drama, the man’s wife revealed that she had always suspected her husband was raising children that were not his own.
Partners Chiriseri from Global DNA Zimbabwe, in an interview with HealthTimes, confirmed the high rate of negative paternity test results, stating, “The current statistics for people who have undergone testing are both shocking and interesting. Most clients come for paternity tests, and currently, 72% of the results issued are negative, while only 28% are positive.”
Chiriseri clarified that paternity tests provide definitive results, with either a 0% or 99.99% certainty of paternity. There are no intermediate percentages, as partial probabilities are only applicable to relationship tests.
“Most people do DNA tests to confirm the paternity of their alleged children. This usually stems from suspicions of infidelity, particularly on the part of women, leading the alleged fathers to seek confirmation. These tests provide peace of mind to those involved,” Chiriseri explained.
Beyond paternity testing, Global DNA Zimbabwe offers a range of DNA testing services for various purposes, including immigration, career development, and forensic identification.
According to Chiriseri, “DNA tests can be conducted for immigration purposes, especially for individuals applying for visas to countries like the UK and the United States. Parents may need to prove their biological relationship with their children before relocating.”
He also noted the growing popularity of DNA profiling, which allows individuals to store their genetic information for future identification purposes. “DNA samples can be banked for future identification purposes, such as in cases where human remains are unrecognizable after an accident. The stored profile can then be compared to recovered DNA samples for identification,” he said.
DNA testing also plays a crucial role in legal cases. “For example, in rape cases, DNA testing can help identify suspects if semen or other biological evidence is collected from victims. By comparing the DNA profile of a suspect to the collected sample, authorities can confirm or rule out their involvement,” Chiriseri explained.
The establishment of national DNA databases for convicts, as seen in countries like the United States, could significantly enhance criminal investigations and law enforcement efforts in Zimbabwe.
Types of DNA Tests Offered by Global DNA Zimbabwe
Global DNA Zimbabwe provides a comprehensive suite of DNA testing services, catering to a wide range of needs:
- Paternity DNA Testing: This is the most common type of DNA test, used to determine whether an alleged father is the biological father of a child. It is recommended that the alleged father, mother, and child participate in the test for maximum accuracy.
- Maternity DNA Testing: While less common than paternity testing, maternity DNA testing confirms whether a woman is the biological mother of a child. This test is often required for visa processing and in cases of suspected baby swapping in hospitals.
- Pre-Natal DNA Testing: This test allows for the determination of paternity before birth, as early as eight weeks into the pregnancy. The test analyzes fetal DNA present in the mother’s blood and compares it to the alleged father’s DNA.
- Relationship DNA Testing: When direct paternity or maternity testing is not possible, relationship DNA testing can be used to establish biological relationships. This category includes several types of tests:
- Grandparent Test: Confirms if a child is related to the alleged grandparents when the parents are unavailable for testing.
- Siblingship Test: Determines if two individuals share the same father.
- Avuncular Test: Compares DNA between an individual and the alleged uncle or aunt of the suspected father. For greater accuracy, it is recommended that at least two known relatives participate in the test.
- Y-Chromosome Test: This test is conducted on males only and confirms shared ancestry between relatives.
- Legal DNA Testing: Legal DNA testing follows a strict chain of custody to ensure that the results are admissible in court. This type of testing is commonly used in:
- Child custody cases
- Birth certificate amendments
- Inheritance disputes
- Immigration applications
- Animal DNA Testing: Global DNA Zimbabwe also offers DNA testing for animals, used to confirm paternity, create genetic profiles, and maintain DNA banks, particularly for purebred animals.
Global DNA Zimbabwe: A Pioneer in DNA Testing Services
Since its establishment in 2016, Global DNA Zimbabwe has emerged as a leading provider of DNA testing services in Zimbabwe and the broader region. The company boasts a network of over 49 sample collection centres, operating in partnership with private hospitals, pharmacies, and health service providers.
DNA samples are typically collected through simple and non-invasive methods, such as cheek swabs or blood samples. However, alternative methods, including hair follicles, fingernails, earwax, and used toothbrushes, can also be used, as they often contain sufficient DNA for testing purposes.
DNA testing remains the most reliable method for confirming a child’s paternity. Given the conclusive and traceable nature of DNA results, it is highly recommended in cases where doubts exist. Regardless of the service provider, DNA results remain consistent and provide definitive answers. The high percentage of negative paternity tests revealed by Global DNA Zimbabwe underscores the importance of these services in providing clarity and certainty to individuals and families across Zimbabwe.
