Eunice Dembo, the widow of the late sungura music superstar Leonard Dembo, has expressed overwhelming gratitude to businessman Wicknell Chivayo for his extraordinary generosity, saying he has honoured her husband’s legacy in a way she could never have imagined.
Mai Dembo was gifted a brand new Toyota Fortuner and a US$50,000 cash donation to start her own business. In addition, her two sons, Morgan and Tendai, and her daughter Fenistia, each received a Toyota Aqua.
On Friday, as Zimbabwe celebrated National Youth Day, Chivayo extended his generosity to the Dembo family.
“National Youth Day is about SECURING THE FUTURE for all YOUNG Zimbabweans and no young person who carries the legacy of our HEROES should be left behind,” Chivayo stated.
“It is in this spirit that I also want to recognise TENDAI, MORGAN, and FENISTIA DEMBO, the children of the Late MUSIC ICON who, like many Zimbabwean youth, are working hard to uphold their father’s legacy. You represent the next generation of artists, leaders and entrepreneurs, and it is only fitting that on such a day which celebrates youth empowerment you also get something. Please go to ENTERPRISE CAR SALES and see Madzibaba Chipaga and get a TOYOTA AQUA each,” he said on Friday.
Upon arriving at Exquisite Car Sales, where Mai Dembo collected her Toyota Fortuner, the Dembo family was warmly welcomed by the firm’s representative, Victor Matiyenga.
Matiyenga explained, “Exquisite Car Dealership is so excited today by your arrival here after we invited you to come and collect your fully paid-for brand new 2025 Fortuner vehicle plus your US$50K for your own business start. Sir Wicknell Chivayo said the interview that was done by H-Metro newspaper reached him and that was when he said, no, let me help my mother as he is a big musical fan of the late Leonard Dembo. This is why we have invited you here.”
Overcome with emotion, Mai Dembo expressed her heartfelt appreciation, saying, “Firstly, I want to thank my son (Chivayo) for remembering me. I am speechless, totally out of words to thank him. I never expected him to have it in his mind that I am there as his mother. He has donated cars and money to me and my three children, imagine four cars and US$50K to start our own business. This hard cash from my son Chivayo is for my business.”
She further added, “I think my brothers, children and in-laws here are going to help me in my movements as you all know that I am no longer able to walk around alone. My dream now is to work hard so that one day I will invite my son (Chivayo) to come and witness the fruits of his gesture.
“I think it is historic that one artist receives four cars and US$50 000 on top. This has defined the late legendary Dembo’s legacy. May God give Chivayo many years of long healthy life. Look at how God has welcomed these blessings, the rain started at the exact minute when the car and cash were handed over to us.”
A neighbour of Mai Dembo, identified as Amoyo, shared the community’s joy, saying, “The whole community is extremely happy with Chivayo’s donation because this woman is a very hard-working woman who raised her three children on her own as a widow. Thank you Chivayo for looking after the widows and orphans, takutodyawo window.”
Another neighbour, Charles Zondo, praised Dembo’s sons, stating, “My young brothers, Tendai and Morgan, are very disciplined youths, I spend a lot of time with Morgan doing music.”
Alick Macheso’s former manager, William Tsandukawa, offered a word of advice to Morgan and his siblings, saying, “I want to advise Morgan and his siblings to behave behind these wheels.”
