HARARE – Three women from Mabvuku, who reside at Babylon Night Club, have been brought before the courts charged with the murder of a man they accused of stealing a mobile phone. The incident has cast a shadow over the Old Tafara neighbourhood and highlighted the ongoing issue of violence in Harare’s nightlife scene.
Mavis Gambiza, Sharon Tayengwa, and Sharon Mufushe appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova, where they were formally charged but not asked to enter a plea. The gravity of the accusations means the trio will remain in custody pending a High Court trial.
The state, represented by prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi, alleges that in the early hours of Thursday, February 13th, at Babylon Bar in Old Tafara, the three women confronted Charles Julius, accusing him of theft. The court heard that the confrontation escalated into a violent assault.
It is alleged that the women repeatedly struck Julius on the head with a pot and other unidentified objects. The ferocity of the attack left Julius with severe injuries.
Julius was initially taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment, with the incident logged under Mabvuku police reference OB1027/25. After receiving medical attention, he was discharged the same day.
Tragically, Julius succumbed to his injuries two days later, on Saturday, passing away at his home. The death prompted swift action from law enforcement, leading to the immediate arrest of the three women.
During their court appearance, Magistrate Matova informed Gambiza, Tayengwa, and Mufushe that any application for bail would need to be made directly to the High Court, acknowledging the seriousness of the charges. The three accused were remanded in custody to March 3, pending indictment for trial.
Meanwhile, in a separate case highlighting the issue of violence, Meluleki Ndlovu of Burombo Flats in Bulawayo, accused of murdering his wife, was taken for police indications on Monday afternoon.
Ndlovu is accused of assaulting his wife, Siphiwe Ndlovu, before she fell from their third-floor apartment window, sustaining fatal injuries. The circumstances surrounding Siphiwe’s death remain a subject of intense scrutiny.
Under heavy police guard, Ndlovu was escorted back to the scene of the incident, where detectives meticulously reconstructed the events leading up to the tragedy. The presence of a coffin containing Siphiwe’s body, transported in the same police van, served as a stark reminder of the human cost of the alleged crime.
Police indications involve taking an accused person back to the crime scene as detectives reconstruct the events leading to the crime.
Meluleki is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. Meanwhile, mourners have gathered at number G159 in Mzilikazi suburb to pay their respects to Siphiwe’s family.
