Rusape – A shocking discovery in Domborembizi Village, just outside Rusape, has left the community reeling after a dog was found mauling a human skull, ultimately leading to the identification of a missing man.
The grim find was made on February 3, 2025, when Kudakwashe Majarira (32), a resident of Village 32, Domborembizi, noticed her dog behaving strangely at her homestead. Upon closer inspection, she was horrified to find the animal gnawing on a human skull.
“On February 3, 2025, around 9am, Kudakwashe Majarira (32), of Village 32, Domborembizi, discovered a human skull that was being mauled by her dog at her homestead,” said Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson.
Majarira immediately alerted local leaders and villagers, including Pearson Makondo (38), who had been desperately searching for his missing father, Milton Makondo (73). Pearson quickly identified the skull as belonging to his father, who had been last seen on January 14, 2025.
“On January 14, 2025, Milton Makondo was last seen by his son, Pearson Makondo (38), of Village 51, Nemaire, on the outskirts of Rusape, while staying alone at his house,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka confirmed.
The discovery was promptly reported to Rusape Rural Police Station, and officers, along with detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) homicide unit, were dispatched to the scene.
A thorough search of the nearby thicket was launched, leading to the discovery of additional human remains in an advanced state of decomposition. Police also found clothing that Pearson Makondo positively identified as belonging to his late father.
“The police and community searched the nearby bush leading to the discovery of human remains that were in an advanced state of decomposition as well as the deceased’s clothes. The deceased’s son positively identified the clothes as belonging to Milton,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka explained.
The police spokesperson stated that there were no visible signs of a struggle at the scene. The remains have been taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
“There were no visible struggle marks at the scene. The police collected the remains, which were taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka added.
While investigations are ongoing, the Domborembizi community remains deeply unsettled by the tragic event. Questions linger about the circumstances surrounding Milton Makondo’s disappearance and death, and residents are expressing concerns about the overall safety and security of the area.
“The police searched the area, but failed to find any additional evidence that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding Makondo’s death,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, emphasizing that the police are “working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the man’s death.”
