A Harare woman has made startling allegations in the Civil Court, claiming her husband’s bizarre sexual practices involving chilli are compromising her health and causing her significant distress.

Joyce Garikayi is accusing her husband, Jack Mukandwe, of gross abuse, detailing a disturbing pattern of behaviour that has led her to seek a protection order from the court.

“My privates are now reacting and always itching as a result of the chilli that is used by my husband in what he claims is a way to spice up our sex encounters,” Joyce told Magistrate Meenal Naratom.

The allegations paint a picture of a deeply troubled marriage, with Joyce claiming that Jack resorts to insults and accusations of infidelity when she refuses his sexual advances. “Every time I deny him sex, he insults me saying my father’s goblins are the ones sleeping with me,” she revealed.

Incredibly, Jack Mukandwe did not deny the shocking allegations made by his wife. He admitted to experimenting with chilli during sexual encounters, claiming he was influenced by conversations with his friends. He stated that he heard his friends saying they also use chilli on their wives.

Joyce further revealed that she had been forced to move back to her parents’ home due to Jack’s violent behaviour, but he continues to pursue her and subject her to further abuse. She expressed that she now feared for her life and pleaded with the court for protection.

Beyond the disturbing claims about the chilli-infused sexual practices, Joyce also accused Jack of physical and emotional abuse. “He calls me a prostitute in front of our children,” she stated.

“Jack assaults me with an electricity cable each time he is angry. He is in the habit of removing asbestos from our roof each time he feels I have provoked him.”

She also expressed concerns about Jack’s possession of dangerous weapons and his constant threats to kill her. “He has some dangerous weapons and he is always threatening to kill me,” she said, adding that her parents are also being harassed by Jack. “My parents no longer have peace as Jack calls them every night and if they do not pick up he wakes me up saying he knows they have gone to practice witchcraft.”

Magistrate Meenal Naratom granted a protection order in favour of Joyce Garikayi, offering her some measure of legal protection from her husband’s alleged abuse.

Jack Mukandwe apologised for his violent conduct in court. “I am sorry for being violent, it’s because of my temper issues, I am sorry my wife for being harsh on you. We can still make our marriage work,” he said.

However, it remains to be seen whether Jack’s apology is genuine and whether he will take steps to address his alleged abusive behaviour and the disturbing sexual practices that have led to the breakdown of his marriage.
