Too much poverty forces deadly Bulawayo woman to stab her husband and their 2 children to death

Bulawayo is reeling from a horrific incident in which a 34-year-old woman, Happiness Chimbangu, allegedly murdered her husband, Edwin Chimbangu (35), and their two young children, four-year-old Promise and a seven-month-old baby, at their Cowdray Park home.

The brutal attack, confirmed by Bulawayo deputy police provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, unfolded on Thursday, 30th January 2025.

The chilling details paint a picture of escalating despair leading to unspeakable violence. Earlier that day, around 8am, Happiness visited her mother, expressing her distress over the family’s dire financial situation. She complained that her husband was not providing adequately for their needs, claiming they were living in “abject poverty”. This initial complaint, however, offered no foreshadowing of the horrific events to come.

Later, around 3pm, Happiness returned to her mother’s home, visibly more agitated. This time, her words were even more alarming. She instructed her mother to “take care of her children as she was going to kill herself”. This desperate plea for help, however, was tragically misinterpreted as a simple expression of suicidal ideation.

The situation took a more sinister turn later that night. Around 1am, Edwin contacted Happiness’s mother, urging her to come to their home. He explained that Happiness was talking about suicide and needed help. The mother, accompanied by two church members, went to the house and engaged in counselling with Happiness, who admitted suicidal thoughts. They left, believing the immediate crisis had passed, at around 1am.

Tragically, this brief respite proved to be short-lived. Just two hours later, at approximately 2am, a chilling phone call shattered the fragile calm. A neighbour, also a church member, contacted Happiness’s mother, revealing the horrifying truth: Happiness had killed her family.

Upon arriving at the scene, police discovered the bodies of Edwin and his two children. Edwin lay on the bed, bearing a deep cut to his right ear, neck, right cheek, and near his right eye. Four-year-old Promise was found lying on a mattress nearby, with a deep cut on her back shoulder and several cuts on the right side of her head. The infant also lay on the bed with her father, suffering a deep cut to the right side of her head and right cheek. All three were deceased.

A metal digger, believed to be the murder weapon, was found near the door, stained with blood. Happiness’s blue dress also bore bloodstains, providing further evidence of her alleged involvement in the horrific crime.

The bodies were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for post-mortem examinations. The investigation is ongoing, and Happiness Chimbangu is currently in police custody, facing charges of murder.
