In a shocking case of domestic violence, a Harare man has been accused of brutally assaulting his mother-in-law, blaming her for his wife’s alleged infidelity. Getrude Makwemba approached the Harare Civil Court seeking a protection order against her son-in-law, Benjamin Chama, who she claims attacked her for “not grooming her daughter properly.”

According to Makwemba, Chama accused her of hiring men to sleep with her daughter, his wife. “Chama assaulted me, blaming me for not bringing up my daughter well. Since the day my child was caught with a boyfriend by her husband, I have been a slave to him,” she told the court. The allegations have left the family in turmoil, with Makwemba seeking legal protection from further abuse.

Chaos in Court: Man Tries to Attack In-Laws After Tea-Burning Incident

In a separate but equally dramatic case, Hills Jania caused a scene at the Harare Civil Court after being accused of pouring hot tea on his wife’s private parts. The incident occurred when Jania discovered romantic text messages on his wife Rumbidzayi Maripoko’s phone, allegedly exchanged with another man.

The chaos erupted just as the court session ended, with Jania seen dragging Rumbidzayi in front of her outraged family. “You do not have any right to hold or talk to my daughter. It was not easy raising her just for you to burn her,” Rumbidzayi’s mother shouted. Police had to intervene to restore order as tensions flared.

Jania, who was apologising to his in-laws for assaulting his wife, did not deny the allegations. Instead, he demonstrated in court how he had attacked Rumbidzayi. “I did slap her, but twice only, maybe it was jealousy,” he admitted.

A Marriage in Shambles

Rumbidzayi, who has been married to Jania for 12 years, broke down in tears as she recounted the abuse. “We have been married for 12 years, and I am his second wife, but I never knew I was married to a monster,” she said.

She detailed how Jania assaulted her, shouting, “You’re a prostitute, you must die,” during the attack. Rumbidzayi also made a harrowing claim that Jania attempted to rape their three-year-old child, leaving the toddler traumatised and suffering from nightmares.

“He tried to rape our three-year-old child, who is now traumatised and having nightmares every day,” Rumbidzayi revealed. She added that Jania compared her unfavourably to his first wife, stating, “Hills said I am not good in bed and his first wife, who stays in Chitungwiza, is the one who is good in bed.”

A Plea for Divorce

Rumbidzayi expressed her desire to end the marriage, stating, “This marriage should end; I am no longer interested. After assaulting me, you want us to continue with this relationship?”

Despite the gravity of the allegations, Jania pleaded for reconciliation, claiming his actions were driven by jealousy. “Rumbidzayi, I love you, and I do not want our relationship to end for the sake of our kids,” he said.

He admitted to causing her physical harm, saying, “I admit that after I assaulted her, she started bleeding because she has a high fever.” However, he insisted that the marriage could still be salvaged. “A lot of good and bad things happened, but we should not choose this way of breaking our marriage,” he added.

Jania also addressed the text messages that sparked the incident, claiming, “All I wanted to know was why you entertain a man whilst you are married. I am aware that you went to Canada with this same man, claiming you were at work. I never meant to hurt you.”

Court Grants Protection Order

Magistrate Meenal Naratom granted Rumbidzayi a protection order against Jania, offering her some relief from the abuse. However, Jania requested that the order not bar him from their shared residence, stating, “I do not mind being barred from going to her workplace, but not at the residential premise; that is where I stay.”
