Movie-style accident: Police officer is battling for life in hospital after being hit by a train while chasing a kombi

A police officer sustained injuries on Saturday evening following a collision between a police vehicle and a train at a level crossing in Marondera. The incident, which occurred on January 18th, underscores the inherent risks associated with high-speed pursuits, particularly when disregarding basic road safety regulations.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) confirmed the accident via a post on its X account. According to the NRZ, the unnamed officer failed to adhere to crucial level crossing rules, which mandate that all drivers must come to a complete stop and only proceed after ensuring no train is approaching. The NRZ statement indicated that the officer was engaged in a pursuit of a fleeing commuter omnibus (kombi) at the time of the accident.

“Indications are that the officer was chasing after a fleeing kombi,” the NRZ statement read. The statement went on to issue a strong warning: “We urge motorists, including law enforcement agents, to always exercise caution when approaching level crossings and never try to race an approaching train. This relentless pursuit culture has frequently resulted in accidents, endangering the lives of both officers and civilians.”

While the NRZ statement suggests the officer was chasing a kombi, independent verification of this detail by the news crew has not been possible at this time. However, the incident highlights a broader concern regarding the ongoing conflict between law enforcement and unlicensed commuter operators.

Recently, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) launched a major crackdown on unregistered kombis and pirate taxis in Harare, resulting in the impounding of over 13,500 vehicles. This operation reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the widespread problem of unlicensed public transport, a sector often characterised by unsafe practices and disregard for traffic regulations.

The cat-and-mouse game between police and kombi drivers frequently leads to high-speed chases in densely populated areas. These pursuits create significant risks, not only for those directly involved but also for innocent bystanders. The Marondera incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of such reckless behaviour.

The injured officer’s failure to observe the basic safety protocols at the level crossing tragically illustrates the dangers inherent in prioritising the apprehension of suspects over adherence to road safety regulations.
