Nigerian disc jockey Nonso Temisan Ajufo, better known as DJ Big N, has recounted a terrifying ordeal involving an armed robbery in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, January 12th, left the popular DJ with a gunshot wound and the loss of over US$114,000 worth of valuables.

In a detailed Instagram post, DJ Big N described the events of that night. He explained that after enjoying a night out with friends at a Johannesburg lounge, he was heading to another club with an acquaintance when their vehicle was ambushed at a traffic light.

“On Sunday, January 12th, a night out turned into both the worst and most teachable experience of my life. I went out with some friends to a fancy lounge in Johannesburg, SA. From there I decided to head to another club with another acquaintance. On the way, at a traffic light, we were ambushed by two cars carrying six armed men with automatic rifles,” he wrote.

The situation quickly escalated into a desperate struggle for survival. “In the chaos, I tried to escape but got shot in the leg. One of the robbers put the rifle to my head and demanded my watch, which I struggled to remove, along with my chain and other jewellery,” DJ Big N recounted.

Despite the severe injury and the trauma of being held at gunpoint, DJ Big N managed to escape. “Bleeding heavily, I managed to get back to the car, and the driver rushed me to the nearest hospital,” he shared.

His injuries, while serious, proved to be less life-threatening than initially feared. “The bullet had passed through my leg, narrowly missing a major artery and bone. Doctors described this as miraculous, calling me ‘lucky.’ I credit my survival to divine intervention and my mother’s prayers,” he added.

The experience, while harrowing, has profoundly impacted DJ Big N’s perspective on life. The loss of his expensive possessions – valued at over US$114,000 – has served as a stark reminder of life’s fragility.

“The experience changed my perspective on life. I lost over $114k worth of valuables that day, but I realised material possessions mean nothing. Life is fragile, and validation is meaningless. God gave me another chance, and I’m committed to living more authentically and appreciating life without unnecessary stress,” he reflected.

The incident, he emphasised, has sharpened his focus on what truly matters. Despite the negative experience, he retains a positive view of his time in South Africa.

“This event restored my focus and reminded me of what truly matters. I met so many wonderful people in SA, and went to so many beautiful places…. and like any other country, there would be bad eggs that paint the nation bad,” he concluded.

His statement underscores a sentiment shared by many: that individual criminal acts should not overshadow the positive experiences and interactions that can occur within a country. The incident comes just a few weeks after another Nigerian national was stoned to death in South Africa in front of his girlfriend.

DJ Big N’s harrowing experience serves as a stark reminder of the risks and dangers that can be present even in seemingly safe environments. His story highlights the importance of personal safety and the unpredictable nature of violence.
