Harare – The start of 2025 was marred by tragedy on Zimbabwean roads, with two fatal accidents claiming the lives of three people and leaving five others injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed a serious head-on collision and are appealing for information regarding two separate hit-and-run incidents.
The first incident, a head-on collision, occurred at approximately 4:30 AM on New Year’s Day along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road, at the 86-kilometre peg. The ZRP report detailed the circumstances: “The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 86-kilometre peg along Harare–Nyamapanda Road on 01/01/25 at around 0430 hours. Two people were killed while five others were injured when a Toyota Runx vehicle with two passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit vehicle with five passengers on board.”
The collision involved a Toyota Runx carrying two occupants and a Honda Fit with five people inside. The impact resulted in the tragic loss of two lives and injuries to the remaining five individuals.
In a separate incident in Bulawayo, police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that also occurred on New Year’s Day. A 23-year-old man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle along Khami Road, near the DA Service Station. The driver of the vehicle involved failed to stop at the scene, leaving the victim to perish. Bulawayo police have issued a public appeal for information that could assist in their investigation, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward.
Adding to the grim toll of New Year’s Day road accidents is another hit-and-run incident in Harare. An unidentified man, estimated to be around 30 years old, was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle along Magoda Road, opposite OK Supermarket in Pamubhedha, Budiro 5.
The incident occurred on 1 January, leaving the victim deceased at the scene. His body was subsequently transported to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination. Police are actively pursuing leads in this case and are also appealing to the public for any information that might help identify the vehicle and its driver.
The ZRP’s appeals for information in both the Bulawayo and Harare hit-and-run cases highlight the urgent need for witnesses to come forward. The lack of information surrounding these incidents underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in investigating such crimes, particularly when the perpetrators flee the scene. The police are urging anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact their nearest police station.
