Concession – A Concession man has been jailed for four months after disrupting a funeral by drunkenly forcing open a coffin. Paradzai Pinjisi (33) appeared before Concession Magistrates’ Court last Friday facing charges of disorderly conduct.
The incident, which unfolded on November 25th at a compound in Concession, involved Pinjisi’s highly intoxicated arrival at the funeral, where he proceeded to cause a significant disturbance.
Prosecutor Munyaradzi Nengomasha detailed the events to the court. He explained that Pinjisi, heavily intoxicated on an illicit brew known locally as “Twumbwa”, arrived at the funeral and aggressively made his way to the coffin. There, he proceeded to open it, supposedly to conduct his own ‘body viewing process’, causing considerable chaos and distress among the mourners.
The unexpected and disrespectful act prompted a police report, leading to Pinjisi’s subsequent arrest. The court heard how his behaviour significantly disrupted the solemnity of the funeral proceedings, causing distress to those in attendance. The details of his actions were presented to the court, highlighting the gravity of his actions and the emotional impact on the bereaved family and other mourners.
The magistrate, after considering the evidence presented by the prosecution, sentenced Pinjisi to four months imprisonment. The sentence reflects the seriousness of the offence and serves as a warning against similar acts of public disorder and disrespect for the deceased and grieving families.
