The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a strong warning to the public regarding a syndicate that is circulating counterfeit United States dollars in $100 denominations.
This alarming activity has been reported in Mashonaland West province, particularly in the administrative capital, Chinhoyi.
Inspector Ian Kohwera, the provincial spokesperson for the ZRP, expressed concern about the situation, stating, “Police in Mashonaland West Province are worried about the circulation of fake US dollar notes in the province, particularly Chinhoyi town.”
He emphasised that authorities are actively working to track down those involved in this fraudulent scheme.
This deceptive practice has left many unsuspecting business owners vulnerable to financial loss.
The criminals typically engage in small transactions, purchasing goods worth less than US$100. By doing so, they receive change in legitimate currency, effectively defrauding businesspeople and individuals in the process.
“They are using different vehicles like Toyota Fortuner and other posh cars,” Kohwera noted, highlighting the sophistication of the operation.
In light of this growing threat, the police have urged the business community to remain vigilant. Kohwera advised, “Police is appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the syndicate to approach any nearest police station.”
He stressed the importance of being cautious when accepting large denomination notes. To further protect themselves, business owners are encouraged to carefully vet customers who present US$100 notes.
“Everyone should familiarise themselves with security features of not only US notes but all currencies,” the police spokesman advised. This knowledge can help prevent falling victim to the cunning tactics employed by the counterfeiters.
As the investigation continues, the ZRP is calling on the public to assist in identifying and reporting any suspicious activities related to this counterfeit operation. The collaboration between law enforcement and the community is vital in combating this growing menace.
