A Chitungwiza traditional healer, popularly known as Sekuru Ndunge, is a fugitive following allegations of raping his neighbour. The incident, which came to light on November 14th, 2024, involves a 25-year-old woman who reported the sexual assault to her mother. The alleged perpetrator, whose real identity remains unconfirmed, is currently at large.
It’s important to note that the name “Sekuru Ndunge” may be a pseudonym. A traditional healer with the same name from Chipinge passed away five years ago, raising questions about the suspect’s true identity and whether he is using the name to exploit the reputation of the deceased. The police investigation is focusing on establishing the suspect’s true identity.
The alleged rape occurred sometime in October 2024. According to Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, the healer had previously proposed to the 25-year-old woman, a proposal she rejected. The rejection appears to have preceded the alleged assault.
Inspector Chakanza confirmed the ongoing investigation: “Police are investigating a rape case involving a traditional healer and his neighbour in Chitungwiza,” he said.
He detailed the events leading to the reported rape: “On an unknown date during the month of October 2024, the woman was doing laundry at her place of residence when she was approached by the traditional healer. He lured her to his house and raped her and she did not disclose the rape.
“The matter came to light on November 14, 2024 when the complainant disclosed the sexual abuse to her mother. The complainant was escorted to Chitungwiza Central Hospital for medical examination and the perpetrator is on the run,” said Insp Chakanza.
Following the alleged assault, the traditional healer reportedly threatened his victim with unspecified consequences, further compounding the gravity of the situation. The woman’s silence until November 14th, when she confided in her mother, highlights the potential intimidation tactics employed by the alleged perpetrator.
