A brutal act of mob justice has claimed the life of Benny Chidiwa of Murereka, Lion’s Den, near Chinhoyi, leaving three men facing murder charges. The incident occurred on November 8th, 2024, at Fairplay farm near Risheng Mine in Chikuti.

Chidiwa’s death followed accusations that he had stolen a cellphone belonging to one of his assailants. According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Goodwill Love (25) has been arrested in connection with the murder.

Commissioner Nyathi detailed the horrific events leading to Chidiwa’s death: “The suspect and his two accomplices, only identified as Bigboy and Brave, allegedly took turns to assault the victim with a shovel and logs before burning his feet with firewood after accusing him of stealing a cellphone belonging to Bigboy.”

The suspects’ actions demonstrate a shocking disregard for human life and the rule of law. Instead of reporting the alleged theft to the authorities, they took matters into their own hands, resorting to extreme violence and torture in a desperate attempt to extract a confession.

The brutality of the attack, involving repeated beatings with heavy implements and the deliberate burning of Chidiwa’s feet, paints a grim picture of the events that unfolded on that fateful day. The alleged actions of Bigboy, Brave, and Love represent a grave violation of human rights and stand as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked mob justice.

The police are actively pursuing the remaining two suspects, Bigboy and Brave, urging anyone with information regarding their whereabouts to come forward and assist in the investigation. The swift arrest of Goodwill Love demonstrates the ZRP’s commitment to bringing those responsible for this heinous crime to justice.

The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the authorities piece together the events leading to Chidiwa’s death.

This tragic incident is not an isolated case. In a separate incident on the same day, November 8th, 2024, police in Harare are investigating the death of an unidentified man found at a church shrine in the Chirasavana area of Dema. The body, covered with a blanket, bore a head wound, and a blood-stained stone was recovered at the scene.

The ZRP is appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses any information that could assist in the investigation.
