HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of the seven victims who perished in a horrific collision between a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus and a fuel tanker on the Harare-Bulawayo Road near the Kuwadzana 7 turn-off on Thursday, October 31st, 2024.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 5:10 am, resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the release of the names, stating: “Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s press statement dated October 31, 2024 and a post on our X handle on a fatal road traffic accident which occurred along Harare-Bulawayo Road, Kuwadzana 7 turn-off, Harare on October 31, 2024 at around 5.10 am. The Zimbabwe Republic Police releases the names of the seven victims who were killed when a Toyota Hiace kombi collided with a fuel tanker. The victims were identified by their next of kin.”
The victims were identified as: Susan Fly (37), Taonezvi Makumbe (54), Benson Musimi (36), Romeo Mahefu (20), Egnes Maenzanise (48), Neli Gwezera (27), and Aleck Dambaza (37). All seven victims were residents of Kuwadzana 5, Harare. The tragedy has left a deep scar on the community, with families and friends grappling with the devastating loss.
Commissioner Nyathi further appealed to public service vehicle operators to adhere strictly to all traffic regulations, stating: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores public service vehicle operators to observe all road rules and regulations when traveling on the country’s roads to safeguard lives. Above all, motorists are urged to exercise caution and practice good driving conduct to promote road safety.”
His statement underscores the importance of responsible driving in preventing such devastating accidents.
Meanwhile, the driver of the commuter omnibus has been formally charged with culpable homicide. Preliminary investigations suggest the driver made a reckless right turn into the path of the oncoming fuel tanker, leading to the catastrophic collision.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona issued a statement strongly condemning the driver’s actions, describing them as “reckless” and a “blatant violation” of road rules. The Minister’s statement reflects the government’s serious concern about the incident and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
