Harare police are investigating a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old woman on October 1st, along Robert Mugabe Road near VID Eastlea.

The incident, which involved a Toyota Hiace Kombi and three unidentified vehicles, has sparked outrage and highlighted concerns about road safety and the lack of responsibility displayed by some drivers.

The sequence of events, as detailed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), began when a Toyota Hiace Kombi, carrying eight passengers, struck a woman, causing her to fall to the ground.

The initial impact, however, was not the cause of her death. Tragically, three unidentified vehicles, travelling behind the Kombi, then ran over the woman without stopping to offer assistance.

The ZRP statement reads: “Police in Harare are investigating a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 01/10/24 along R Mugabe Road near VED Eastlea. A Toyota Hiace kombi with eight passengers on board hit a yet to be identified woman (approximately 25).

“As a result the victim fell on the ground and was run over by three unidentified vehicles which were driving behind the Toyota Hiace kombi. The three other vehicles did not stop after the accident. Police have appealed for anyone with information about the accident to come forward and report it at their nearest Police Station.”

The callous disregard for human life shown by the drivers of the three unidentified vehicles is particularly shocking. The woman, already injured from the initial collision with the Kombi, was subjected to further trauma and ultimately perished as a result of being run over by the subsequent vehicles.

The fact that none of these drivers stopped to assist, or even report the incident, underscores a disturbing lack of empathy and responsibility.

While the initial collision with the Kombi is under investigation, the subsequent actions of the three unidentified vehicles highlight a broader problem of reckless driving and a failure to adhere to basic ethical and legal responsibilities after an accident.
