A 37-year-old man from Mugute Village in Penhalonga has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for repeatedly raping his 16-year-old niece over several months, resulting in her pregnancy.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) announced the sentencing on X (formerly Twitter).
The NPAZ statement detailed the horrific ordeal suffered by the young girl. The abuse began in August 2023 when the accused lured his niece to a disused kitchen at their homestead. There, he forced her to the ground and raped her, threatening to kill her if she revealed the assault.
Days later, the niece’s mother sent her to collect groceries from her uncle’s home. Seizing the opportunity, the accused man dragged her to his bedroom and raped her again. He reiterated his threats, warning her to remain silent.
The abuse continued throughout September and October 2023, with the accused raping his niece twice in each month. This pattern of violence persisted into November, January, and February 2024, with the man repeatedly assaulting his niece whenever they encountered each other.
The horrifying truth only came to light in August 2024 when the victim’s sister noticed her visibly pregnant belly. Initially hesitant to reveal the perpetrator, the niece eventually confessed after being pressed by her brother. The matter was immediately reported to the police.
A medical examination confirmed the pregnancy, providing crucial evidence in the case. The accused man was subsequently arrested and charged with rape. The court heard the full extent of his heinous crimes, meticulously presented by the prosecution.
The Penhalonga Magistrates’ Court found the accused guilty on all charges. In handing down the sentence, the magistrate acknowledged the severity of the crimes and the lasting trauma inflicted upon the victim. The court sentenced the man to 20 years imprisonment, although three years of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of sexual violence and the importance of reporting such crimes. The NPAZ’s statement underscores their commitment to prosecuting perpetrators of sexual offences and securing justice for victims.
The case also raises concerns about the prevalence of sexual abuse within families and the need for increased awareness and support for victims. The long-term impact of this trauma on the victim and her family cannot be underestimated.
