A 20-year-old woman is demanding justice after she and her sister were allegedly assaulted by her cousin’s boyfriend at a tavern in Extension 6 on Sunday, 15 September.

The incident, which occurred around 5pm in Cape Town, has left the two women shaken and nursing their injuries.

According to the victim, the boyfriend, believed to be 32 years old, had been drinking at the tavern for hours before they arrived.

“While we were enjoying ourselves, he told my cousin they should leave and go to the house as he wanted them to go and have lula lula,” she said.

The girlfriend, however, refused to leave as she had only been at the tavern for a few hours and was enjoying herself.

“The boyfriend was drinking at the tavern for hours before we arrived, so we joined him with his girlfriend, who is my cousin, as well as my sister,” she explained.

The boyfriend got irritated, wanting lula lula. He insisted they should leave, saying she could return to the tavern afterwards,” the victim continued.

When the girlfriend refused, the “horny and drunk” boyfriend began dragging her away. The two cousins intervened, trying to stop the altercation.

“He started beating us up when we tried to stop him. We fought back, but since he is a man, he managed to beat us up some more. He used an empty bottle to attack us, and my sister and I were left injured,” the victim said.

The victim managed to escape and ran barefoot to the police station, but officers gave her a J88 form to be filled in at the clinic. She returned to the station and opened a case against the boyfriend.

“My boyfriend never bashed me, but a relative’s boyfriend dared to do that. I got him arrested, and he will pay for this dearly,” she said.

Her sister, who was also injured in the attack, said she would also open a case against the man. “He started beating us up when we tried to stop him. We fought back, but since he is a man, he managed to beat us up some more. He used an empty bottle to attack us, and my sister and I were left injured,” she said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the incident.

“Mfuleni police are investigating an assault case following an incident at the Covid informal settlement on Sunday, 15 September 2024. According to the complainant, she was assaulted while trying to stop a fight. Circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made yet,” said Twigg.
