In a bid to restore order on Zimbabwe’s roads and combat rising crime rates, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a nationwide operation targeting unregistered vehicles. Any vehicle found on the country’s roads without the required number plates will be impounded without hesitation.
Effective immediately, any vehicle found on the country’s roads without the required number plates will be seized and held until the necessary registration is completed.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized the importance of vehicle registration.
“The Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, Chapter 13:14, clearly specifies that an acquired vehicle should have a change of ownership effected within two weeks and licensed thereof,” said Comm Nyathi.
He added that unregistered vehicles pose a significant risk to public safety, as they are often used as getaway cars by armed robbers and can also lead to uncompensated accidents.
Commissioner Nyathi warned motorists that unregistered vehicles will not be tolerated on the country’s roads.
“It is in the interest of motorists and road safety for all vehicles moving on the country’s roads to be fitted with permanent registration plates. Vehicles with no permanent registration numbers cannot be licensed or insured,” he said.
The police have intensified their efforts to enforce the Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, and any vehicle found in violation of the law will face immediate action. This includes vehicles that have been imported and are still operating on temporary plates.
The Central Vehicle Registry has assured the police that there is an adequate supply of number plates, so there is no excuse for motorists to delay registering their vehicles. Commissioner Nyathi urged motorists to comply with the law and ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and licensed.
