There was a sombre atmosphere yesterday at Umvutsha Cemetery in Bulawayo as hundreds gathered to bid a final farewell to Lorenzo Palu (36), his wife Forgive (31), and their beloved three-year-old son, Lwandile.

The young family, tragically, were among the 10 passengers who perished in a bus crash last month while returning to South Africa after celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary in Bulawayo.

The scene was heart-wrenching as little Lwandile, dressed in a tiny white suit, was laid to rest in a small coffin between his parents. Mourners wept as the three coffins were lowered simultaneously into the ground, a poignant symbol of the family’s untimely departure.

Lorenzo, a well-respected UX designer, was known for his technology innovation and his unwavering faith. His wife, Forgive, was a budding entrepreneur who ran a start-up company called Sweet Soul Cakes and was also a pre-school teacher. Their son, Lwandile, was a bright and playful child who loved football.

The family’s journey to Bulawayo had been filled with joy and celebration. Just days before the accident, Lorenzo had gathered his childhood friends for a barbecue, where he shared his thoughts on the sanctity of marriage and the importance of family.

“Lorenzo was a devoted Christian, but never judged those of us who didn’t attend church. He was always full of love, always reminding us of the importance of family,” recalled his best friend, Mr Sipho Dube.

“Each time Lorenzo came back to Bulawayo from South Africa, he would call his friends and buy meat and beers for us. He was a devoted Christian, but never shunned or judged his friends and family who consumed alcohol,” Mr Dube added.

The tragedy has left the two neighbouring countries, Zimbabwe and South Africa, in shock and mourning. South African authorities reported that the driver of the bus was new and not familiar with the route.

The accident occurred on a fortnight ago at the Three Mile Circle in Makhado in South Africa’s Limpopo province, involving an Mzansi Express bus travelling from Bulawayo to Johannesburg.

The family’s untimely departure has left a void that will be deeply felt by their loved ones.

“Lorenzo loved his family more than anything. We cannot believe they are gone. The pain is unbearable. No words can express how we are deeply saddened following their untimely departure from earth,” said his brother, Mr Kwanele Palu.

“We would like to thank the Government for assisting us in repatriating the bodies and for providing the coffins,” Mr Palu added as he expressed gratitude for the support they received during this difficult time.

Forgive’s brother, Mr Shepherd Ndlovu, fondly remembered his nephew’s infectious laughter and playful nature.

“My sister had a big heart and always kept the peace. My nephew loved to play around and laugh a lot. I will miss him dearly,” he said.

Lorenzo’s colleagues and family members remember him as a visionary who always sought to uplift others through his work and faith. He was respected not only for his professional achievements but also for his deep commitment to the gospel ministry.

Renowned for his innovative designs and creativity, he participated in the virtual UX South Africa hybrid conference in 2022, where he showcased his passion for enhancing user experiences through technology.

His passing is a tragic loss for the design community, his family, and his friends. The memory of Lorenzo, Forgive, and Lwandile will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.

“It’s hard to put into words the pain we’re all feeling. Lorenzo was more than just a talented designer; he was a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of strength for many. His passing is unimaginable. We can’t express how deeply hurt we are. It’s too much to take in ngoba ngabantwabethu,” said Forgive’s mother, Sifikile Tshuma.
