The Harare-Masvingo highway has been the scene of two devastating accidents within two days, claiming the lives of five people and leaving three others critically injured.

The latest incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, involved a Honda Fit and a Ford Everest at Chaka Business Centre, leaving a married couple dead.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a horrifying collision, alleging that the driver of the Honda Fit failed to yield to the oncoming Ford Everest, resulting in a head-on impact.

The force of the crash claimed the lives of the couple travelling in the Honda Fit, while three other individuals sustained critical injuries. The injured have been transported to Mvuma Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Two days earlier, on Thursday morning, another fatal accident occurred just a few metres away from the Saturday crash site. This incident involved a Freightliner haulage truck and a Nissan UD truck, leaving three people dead.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Nissan UD truck veered off the road, landing on its side after colliding with the Freightliner truck. The driver of the lorry and two women who were in the haulage truck cabin died instantly.

Adding to the tragedy, the driver of the Freightliner truck fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions.

“A UD truck with three passengers on board encroached on to the lane of a Freightliner truck with three passengers on board resulting in a head-on collision. The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma District Hospital for post-mortem, whilst the injured were admitted at the same hospital,” Police said in a statement.

The Midlands police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Francis Ngawagare, confirmed the accidents but stated that an official report from the accident scenes is still pending.
