A horrific accident on the Harare-Masvingo highway on Thursday morning has claimed the lives of three people, leaving a community in shock and mourning.

The collision involved a Freightliner haulage truck and a Nissan UD truck near Chaka Business Centre in the Midlands province.

According to eyewitness accounts, the Nissan UD truck veered off the road, landing on its side after colliding with the Freightliner truck. The driver of the lorry and two women who were in the haulage truck cabin died instantly.

Adding to the tragedy, the driver of the Freightliner truck fled the scene, leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions. The motive behind his escape remains unclear, but the incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is currently investigating the accident, working to determine the cause of the collision and gather evidence to hold those responsible accountable.

Assistant Commissioner Blessmore Chishaka, the National Deputy Police Spokesperson, confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident and will release a detailed statement once more information is available.

“A UD truck with three passengers on board encroached on to the lane of a Freightliner truck with three passengers on board resulting in a head-on collision. The bodies of the victims were taken to Mvuma District Hospital for post-mortem, whilst the injured were admitted at the same hospital,” Police said in a statement.

The accident has highlighted the dangers of the Harare-Masvingo highway, a major thoroughfare that has witnessed numerous accidents in recent times, probably Zimbabwe’s bloodiest road in so many decades.
