The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Masvingo are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the relatives of a man who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident along the Mutare-Masvingo highway.

The incident, which occurred on the 9th of July at 8:30 pm, has left authorities searching for answers and grieving families seeking closure.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, confirmed the grim discovery of the deceased man’s body, found 152 kilometers from Masvingo town. The driver of the vehicle responsible for the fatal collision fled the scene, leaving the victim’s fate unknown until his body was discovered.

“We have the body of a man who was hit by a car on the 9th of July, the car that hit him fled the scene. This man was wearing a black jacket, a yellow jersey and blue trousers. The body of this man is being kept at the Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary,” said Insp Dhewa.

The lack of identification on the deceased has made it difficult for authorities to locate his relatives. Inspector Dhewa urged members of the public who may have lost a male relative to come forward and identify the body at the Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary.

“People who have not seen their male relative can go and identify the body to see if it is their relative,” said Insp Dhewa.

The police are actively investigating the hit-and-run incident, seeking to bring the responsible driver to justice. They have appealed for any information that could lead to the identification of the driver and the vehicle involved.

“Anyone who wants to know more about this case or provide information to the police, should call Inspector Felistas Gwara on 0773 435 768 or speak to the police officer investigating this case, Constable Faith Matema on 0775 719 109. We are looking for the driver of the car that hit this man, we want him to be arrested and face his charges in the courts,” said Insp Dhewa.

The incident has highlighted the importance of responsible driving practices and the need for drivers to remain at the scene of an accident, regardless of the circumstances. Inspector Dhewa urged drivers to exercise caution and to take responsibility for their actions on the roads.

“We urge drivers not to flee the scene if they are involved in an accident, as the driver in this case did,” said Insp Dhewa.

He further emphasized the importance of carrying identification documents while travelling, as this can significantly aid in the identification process in the event of an accident.

“For those who have information about this accident and what happened, who know the driver and the car, we ask that they bring this information to the police. On the other hand, our advice is that people should travel with identification documents so that if an accident like this happens, they can be quickly identified,” said Insp Dhewa.
