Gokwe – A chilling incident has left villagers in Gokwe reeling after a man allegedly attacked his wife and in-laws with an axe, leaving them critically injured. The attack occurred in Village Head Karikoga’s kraal, under Chief Sahi’s area.
The 46-year-old accused man, Matare Karikoga, is said to have been embroiled in a domestic dispute with his wife, Mailet Chikwiko who is 27 years old, on the 19th of August. Following the argument, Mailet, understandably distressed, decided to return to her parents’ home and took her belongings with her.
However, the situation took a sinister turn the following day at around 1 am. Matare, was consumed by anger and went to his in-laws’ residence. He forced his way through the gate, unleashing a brutal attack on his wife. He struck her repeatedly on the head and body with an axe, leaving Mailet fighting for her life.
The sound of Mailet’s screams which were filled with terror woke her father, 72-year-old Sekuru Solomon Chikwiko, from his sleep. He rushed to his daughter’s aid, only to be met by the same brutal force. Matare who was seemingly driven by a rage that knew no bounds, attacked the elderly man and delivered multiple blows to his head with the axe.
The horrific scene continued as Matare, seemingly unfazed by the severity of his actions, continued his assault. He rained blows upon his father-in-law, striking him on the head and hands. It was only after this that he turned his attention back to his wife, this time wielding a stick, and continued to beat her.
The brutality of the attack left both Mailet and Solomon Chikwiko critically injured. They were rushed to Gokwe District Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.
Matare then realised the gravity of his actions and fled the scene, leaving a trail of devastation and fear in his wake. He is now being sought by police, who are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact them immediately.
Police spokesperson for the Midlands, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting the need for peace and understanding in resolving disputes.
“As police, we urge the public to avoid violence and seek help from traditional leaders, police, or religious leaders in case of disputes,” he said.
Inspector Mahoko also appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could lead to Matare’s arrest.
“Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Matare Karikoga can contact us on 054 2221073 or 0778 069 322. Remember, anyone who harbours a criminal is also liable for prosecution,” he warned.
